Vapor Rub Uses

Vapor rub is for more than just a cough.


Vapor rub is a medicated topical ointment that is used to soothe and comfort. Vapor rub contains camphor, menthol and eucalyptus oil. It is inexpensive and can be purchased at any pharmacy. There are several uses for vapor rub to help many ailments.


Cough and Cold


Vapor rub's primary use is for coughing, runny nose and sore throat. It is usually rubbed on a person's chest so that the vapors are inhaled, thus relieving a cold's symptoms. One remedy for babies and young children is to apply the vapor rub to the child's feet and cover with socks.


Muscle Pain


Vapor rub also can be used a muscle pain reliever. Massage the ointment onto the affected area and wrap in a towel. Try to elevate the muscle and relax until the pain begins to fade.


Cracked Feet


To relieve cracked feet, massage a thick layer of vapor rub on the feet and cover with socks. Sleep with this treatment on the feet nightly and, after a few days, the cracked feet should begin to heal. This is an effective remedy for those who frequently wear sandals.


Insect Repellent


Vapor rub also can be used as an insect repellent. Rub on a bit of ointment and it should help the keep bugs away. This application is beneficial because it does not contain any of the chemicals found in bug sprays. A jar of vapor rub also can be left open to keep bugs from an area. Vapor rub also can be rubbed on insect bites to help relieve itching.
