Lavender & Citronella Bug Repellent

Natural bug repellents keep bugs like mosquitoes away without the toxic chemicals.

Using a natural bug repellent containing lavender and citronella instead of toxic chemicals still requires an understanding of the ingredients involved, as many people are sensitive and allergic to a variety of natural substances. Since bug repellents with citronella and lavender are widely tolerated, however, they are safer for most people than toxic chemical options. Does this Spark an idea?

Natural Bug Repellents

The current trend toward natural products has increased the interest in natural bug repellents. Conventional personal bug repellent products found on the shelves of your local retailer typically contain DEET, a known neurotoxin, and labels warn against contact with the skin due to its toxicity. Instead, people are turning to natural products that contain essential oils of various herbs, flowers and plants like lavender and citronella that keep bugs like mosquitoes away.

Properties

Lavender oil is a widely used essential oil from the flowers of the lavender plant. While lavender oil is used mostly in aromatherapy and medicinal applications, it also is used as a natural bug repellent against mosquitoes. Citronella is an essential oil from certain dried grasses that produces a distinctive smell that repels various insects without harming them. Citronella is a main ingredient in many natural bug repellents both for topical application and area repellents such as candles.

Product Options

Many major retailers now offer natural bug repellents with lavender and citronella at various chains across the country. If you cannot find a repellent you like or it is not available in your area for some reason, you can also make your own. Mixing a base oil such as almond or grapeseed oil with 15 to 30 drops of lavender and citronella essential oils each creates a topical rub or spray that will repel mosquitoes naturally for short periods of time.

Effectiveness

According to Dawn H. Gouge, an entomology professor at the University of Arizona, natural bug repellents made primarily with lavender and citronella are effective for approximately 30 minutes before losing effectiveness. Regular reapplication would be needed to remain effective. While this may be seen as inconvenient, conventional commercial products that last for hours typically contain DEET. Also, people with known sensitivities or allergies to either citronella or lavender should consult a medical professional before using such products.
