Mosquito Netting For The Veranda

Enclosing the veranda with netting can effectively keep out mosquitos.

Mosquitoes make any outdoor activity uncomfortable. The parasitic insects cause itchy, painful bites. They also spread diseases that can prove fatal. Screening in a veranda helps create a safe way to enjoy the outdoors. The home's residents can sit within the confines of the screened-in porch during the tranquil evening hours without fear of suffering bites from aggressive mosquitoes. The screen effectively lets in cooling breezes, but keeps out the biting insects. Does this Spark an idea?

Additional Space

A porch, effectively screened in with mosquito netting, not only deters mosquitoes, but also keeps out other insects. Black flies, yellow flies, no-see-ums, moths and bees will be unable to enter the veranda area. A family can safely consume food and drinks without the fear of attracting wasps or filth flies. The screened in veranda becomes additional living space where the family can dine and relax without a plague of flying insects ruining the event.

Netting Options

Professional mosquito netting companies can quickly enclose an entire veranda with high-grade netting. Most guarantee their work. The netting may last two to three years before requiring replacement. A storm can cause the lifespan of the netting to shorten. Homeowners can also purchase rolls of mosquito netting at home improvement stores and undertake the task of screening in the porch without professional help. Mosquito net curtains can also be hung around the veranda to keep mosquitos out. The net curtains are often a cheaper alternative to having the entire veranda enclosed.

Netting

Netting manufactured specifically to keep out mosquitoes, and other insect pests are often treated with an insecticide that kills or repels the insects. Effective mosquito netting should have 120 to 200 holes per square inch to keep the insects out. The holes should measure 1.2-mm-by-1.2-mm. The netting is usually made of polyester, polyamide or nylon mesh. Cotton netting also works well, but can become heavy in humid weather. Some areas suffer from infestations of sand flies, whose small body size requires smaller netting holes to effectively keep out the pests. Use netting with holes that measure 0.6-mm-by-0.6-mm.

Curtains

Mosquito net curtains hang from the top of the veranda's opening just like conventional curtains. They are attached to the top of the veranda by either a track or rod. Leave the curtains open during the day and close the curtains when the mosquitoes come out in the evening. Most mosquito curtains utilize velcro to hold the curtains closed and in place. Mosquito curtains come in black, brown, ivory or white netting to match any home. The curtains wash well in a machine washer.
