Certain plants repel mosquitoes


Mosquitoes are nuisance and big deterrent from enjoying your garden during warm summer evenings. Not only do mosquito bites itch and leave red welts, but mosquitoes can also carry diseases like meningitis. However, there a variety of plants you can put plant in your garden that will repel mosquitoes and allow you to enjoy your summer evenings bite-free. Does this Spark an idea?


Citronella Grass


You may have heard of citronella, since its oil is sold as a common mosquito repellent. However, according to Alderleaf Wilderness College, you can plant citronella grass in your garden and it will have a similar effect. Unfortunately, citronella grass only grows well in tropical regions and can grow up to six feet in height. According to Floridata.com, it only grows well in USDA hardiness zones 10 through 12 and does not survive winters that are cool and damp. The plant is native to southeast Asia but is commonly seen in southern Florida and southern California. According to Floridata.com, some people may have an allergic skin reaction if they come into contact with the plant.


Catnip


Another plant that repels mosquitoes is catnip. While catnip is often planted to feed your cats, its oil is actually 10 times more effective than DEET when warding off mosquitoes, according to Science Daily. While catnip was tested on the type of mosquitoes that carry yellow fever, scientists believe it can be effective on all varieties of mosquito. Catnip also grows quick and well in small pots, so it's easy to place a few plants on your patio to scare off mosquitoes. Catnip is readily available in seed form at garden stores and pet stores.


Rosemary and Other Herbs


You can also plant numerous herbs in your garden that will repel mosquitoes. Rosemary, for example, is an effective option, according to Alderleaf Wilderness College. Like catnip and citronella grass, rosemary produces an oil that mosquitoes don't like. Rosemary also has other benefits. It is delicious when used in cooking and its fragrance will add a nice dimension to your patio. Other herbs that have mosquito-repelling qualities include peppermint, lemon balm, lavender, cloves and eucalyptus. Even though garlic plants don't smell as nice as rosemary, they also have mosquito-repelling qualities.
