Mosquitoes are more than a pest, they are a health hazard all over the world.
Mosquitoes are a dangerous and annoying problem to have around the home. Their buzz is distracting, their bites itch and worst of all their bites can transfer harmful viral diseases. Around the world there are over 3,500 different species of mosquitoes, but luckily you can deal with them all in generally the same manner. Does this Spark an idea?
Commercially Available Products
Bug sprays provide a barrier but are not an effective means of killing mosquitoes.
No one product on the market can get rid of mosquitoes. Current commercially available lotions and sprays don't kill them, they only drive them off. Bug zappers only take care of mosquitoes one at a time. Also, unlike other insects, mosquitoes are not typically drawn to the zapper. Smoke style foggers use pesticide to drive the mosquitoes off, but these are not typically available to the consumer.
Get Them Where They Live
Standing water like puddles can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
By far the most effective method for removing mosquitoes is to remove any place that they can lay eggs. The mosquito lays eggs in standing water, such as puddles, fountains or unattended pet water bowls. The eggs hatch and become pupa that then mature into mosquitoes. To stem their breeding you will need to find any standing water around your home and remove it.
Get Rid of Standing Water
Properly chlorinated pools keep mosqitoes away.
Remove old tires, tin cans, junk cars and tarps from your property. This will help reduce the places for water to accumulate. Store items like wheelbarrows inside a shed or garage. If that is not possible, turn them upside down. Change the water in bird baths and small pools at least once a week. For ponds you can buy fish which eat mosquito eggs.
Remain Vigilant
You will need to stay alert; if you allow water to accumulate again, your mosquito problem will return. After rainstorms, walk your property and your neighborhood to see where water has formed puddles. Talk with your neighbors and city council about this issue, and ask them to do the same. This is a problem that affects everyone, so everyone should be involved.
