Styles Of Indoor And Outdoor Fountains For Homes

Fountains create a cool and moist environment.

Choose a decorative fountain for inside or outside your home based on where you will place it, what you want it for and how much you wish to spend. Fountains spill, bubble, spray and splash and come in many styles, including fountains with a statuary or urn base or stacked stones or boulders, wall-mounted fountains, table-top fountains and free-standing container fountains. Does this Spark an idea?

A Statuary- or Urn-Based Fountain

Urn-based fountains create light play when the urn's surface is rough.

A statuary- or urn-based fountain appears to be perpetually overflowing. This type of fountain looks good even when it is not running. It must be placed in a deep water container that constantly pumps water up through the apparatus by a circulating pump. A statuary- or urn-based fountain can also be placed in a wider and shallower reservoir. Some appear pondless, as if the water is coming from inside the statuary. Achieve this effect by placing the water reservoir below ground or floor level and covering with a grate. Set the urn or statue on the grate along with small rocks or gravel to camouflage the source of the water.

A Stacked Stone or Boulder Fountain

Boulder and stone fountains create a natural effect inside and out.

Stone yards stock large, pre-drilled boulders or stones for use in building a fountain. If not in stock, they will custom drill boulders for you. This type of fountain creates a cool and moist environment for the area surrounding it. Create a waterfall effect with multiple stones or boulders, or pump water through one large boulder affixed with a spray head to display water play in your room or out in your garden.

A Wall-Mounted Fountain

Wall-mounted fountains make a big impact.

Wall fountains pour water, which flows vertically down the fountain structure, from a spout mounted near the top of the wall into a catch basin at its base. The spout can be a simple spigot or a horizontal ledge that simulates a waterfall. Wall-mounted fountains can be placed indoors or outdoors and make a wonderful display of light and sound.

A Table-Top Fountain

Table-top fountains can be installed easily.

A table-top fountain is an easy and inexpensive choice if you want to feature the sound of water indoors or out. Many choices come prepackaged with everything you need. If you wish to create your own, be sure to choose the right size pump for the volume of water that your fountain will move and an electrical outlet with a ground fault interrupter (unless your fountain is solar powered).

A Free-Standing or Container Fountain

Water can bubble or spray in a container fountain.

A free-standing or container fountain can be something as simple as a large plastic vase with a pump sitting on a concrete block or stacked bricks below the surface of the water. This is the type of fountain wherein a versatile spray head on the pumping apparatus can really create a standout visual effect.
