A Statuary- or Urn-Based Fountain

A statuary- or urn-based fountain appears to be perpetually overflowing. This type of fountain looks good even when it is not running. It must be placed in a deep water container that constantly pumps water up through the apparatus by a circulating pump. A statuary- or urn-based fountain can also be placed in a wider and shallower reservoir. Some appear pondless, as if the water is coming from inside the statuary. Achieve this effect by placing the water reservoir below ground or floor level and covering with a grate. Set the urn or statue on the grate along with small rocks or gravel to camouflage the source of the water.

A table-top fountain is an easy and inexpensive choice if you want to feature the sound of water indoors or out. Many choices come prepackaged with everything you need. If you wish to create your own, be sure to choose the right size pump for the volume of water that your fountain will move and an electrical outlet with a ground fault interrupter (unless your fountain is solar powered).
A Free-Standing or Container Fountain

A free-standing or container fountain can be something as simple as a large plastic vase with a pump sitting on a concrete block or stacked bricks below the surface of the water. This is the type of fountain wherein a versatile spray head on the pumping apparatus can really create a standout visual effect.
