Scented Oils That Keep Mosquitoes Away

You can deter mosquitoes by applying various scented oils to your exposed skin.

Mosquitoes are a common warm-weather pest, especially around areas of water and humidity. While there are various species of mosquitoes, only the female insects bite. There are countless remedies for mosquito prevention and bites, some more successful than others. One method for keeping mosquitoes away is through the use of scented oils, which deter mosquitoes and also disguise your body's scent. Does this Spark an idea?

Citronella Oil

With a scent that is similar to lemon or orange, citronella oil is a natural oil that effectively repels mosquitoes, according to the University of Arizona. Unlike artificial or chemical products, using citronella will not hurt your skin or the environment. The oil comes in a variety of products. Most commonly, you will find citronella oil in the form of candles, though you can also find the oil in extract form. Light a citronella candle in outdoor areas that are prone to mosquito attacks. Combine the extract with lavender oil and water, which you can apply to your clothes, spray into the air, and even on your body's exposed areas.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil has been used for many years for its pleasant perfume aroma, but you can also use lavender to keep mosquitoes away. Apply lavender oil to the inner side of your wrists, your neck, behind your ears, knees and on your ankles. Do not use lavender on children younger than 2 and try to avoid getting it into your mouth and eyes. Lavender oil should protect you from mosquito bites for approximately 1 hour.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus is cooling and refreshing in oil form, and it also is known for repelling mosquitoes and other bothersome insects, such as ticks. Massage eucalyptus oil into your pulse areas or spray it onto your clothes or into the surrounding air. You can also mix eucalyptus oil with lavender and citronella oils for extra deterring effects. Not only does eucalyptus oil prevent mosquito bites, it can be used as an antiseptic gargle and to stimulate cardiac activity, according to Aromatherapy at Home.
