Throw An Outdoor Cocktail Party

It's summer, and the living is easy. Entertain your friends by throwing an outdoor cocktail party. Whether deck, porch or poolside, it's simple to express your party personality in the great outdoors. Graduation parties, wedding parties and "just because" parties all seem better outside. Make your next soiree a casual, relaxing affair -- both for the guests and the host! Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set the al fresco scene by putting out lightweight chairs, cushions and tables. If you don't have a patio table, use card tables covered with brightly colored tablecloths or even sheets. If the gentle summer breeze turns to wind, secure the tablecloths with cute hair clips.

2. Bring out pots of blooming flowers. Cut greenery from your yard and make huge bouquets for the deck or porch. Nature is at its best in warm weather, so there's no need to spend a lot on decorations.

3. String Japanese lanterns or white Christmas lights through the trees for a festive look after dusk. If your party begins while it's still sunny, rent a colorful tent to give your guests some shade. Be sure to have some sunscreen on hand, too.

4. Mist the party area with bug spray a few hours before your guests arrive. Light citronella candles to keep mosquitoes at bay.

5. Serve summer drinks, such as wine spritzers, margaritas and sangria. Fill a galvanized tub with ice and beer. Have iced tea with mint for those who don't want alcohol. For a summery look, place large glass containers of lemons and limes on the bar.

6. Dish up some mouth-watering snacks. People eat less in hot weather, so you don't have to go overboard. Cheese platters, surrounded by fruit and crackers are a hot weather favorite. Shrimp cocktail, tiny chicken salad sandwiches and raw vegetables with dip are all good choices. Small lemon tarts are yummy desserts.

7. Plan a rain contingency. If it pours, you'll have to move the party inside
