Screen Repair Supplies & Tools

Wire screen material is the most common for windows.

Window and door screens are the perfect complement to spring weather because they allow a cool breeze to blow into the house. However, damaged screens allow flies and other flying insects to accompany the cool breeze into the house. To prevent this, you need to know about screen supplies and tools needed to make repairs. For holes smaller than two inches square, a screen repair kit is the best bet. Does this Spark an idea?

Spline and Spline Rolling Tool

Spline is soft rubber tubing pushed into a groove around the perimeter of the window screen frame to hold the screen material in place. A spline-rolling tool has a handle with a wheel on either end of it. The rollers match the width of the spline to make it easy to install the spline into the groove. If the spline comes out of the window frame, use the spline-rolling tool to reinsert it.

Hawkbill Knife

The hawkbill knife is the best tool for cutting wire screen material. It resembles a carpet knife in that the blade hooks on the end. Use this tool when you have to cut a patch out of screen material to repair a screen.

Cloth Cutter

For window frames that have cloth screen, a cloth cutter designed especially for this material works the best. Just as the tool with a spline wheel on each end of a handle, the cloth cutter also comes on one end of a spline roller tool.

Screen

Wire screen is still among the most popular material used for window and door screens. It comes in gray, charcoal gray and black. Fiberglass mesh is an option that some people use in place of wire screen. Both types of screen material install the same way.

Screen Repair Kits

For small holes, use a screen repair kit. Kits come with everything you need to repair a small hole. Be certain to match the color of the screen in the kit to the color of the screens on your house.
