Mosquito Repellent For The Backyard

Some repellents help keep mosquitoes away from the backyard.

Female mosquitoes bite humans to obtain blood so their eggs can develop. These bites cause irritation, itching and sometimes diseases. Some mosquito repellent products protect you from being bitten while in the backyard. Does this Spark an idea?

Personal Repellent

Applying topical mosquito repellent to the skin and clothing helps prevent bites. Products that contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR 3535 provide effective, long-lasting protection. These products come as lotions, creams and aerosol sprays.

Area Repellent

Candles that contain oil of citronella help repel mosquitoes in outdoor areas. They work best when there is little air movement, allowing the vaporized repellent to stay near the candles. Multiple candles placed within a few feet of people provide maximum protection.

Considerations

Various repellents can't effectively repel mosquitoes. Bug zappers that electrocute mosquitoes kill more beneficial insects than mosquitoes. Electronic devices that emit high frequency sounds don't keep mosquitoes away. No scientific data supports the use of mosquito traps.
