Sandflies are tiny, black flies found around the world. They are called biting midges in Australia, no-see-ums in the United States and nic nics in the Philippines. Sandflies leave tiny bites that cause severe itching, and scratching can cause worse itching and mild pain. Swelling can occur on and around the bites for several days. There are natural ways to keep sandflies away.
Cover Up
Wearing light-colored clothing can help, and it's wise to cover up as much as possible by wearing long sleeves and pants. Remember to wear high socks: ankle socks do not keep them away, especially in the early morning when dew is still around. Do not wear flip-flops or sandals around sandflies.
Avoid Standing Water
Sandflies, like mosquitoes, spend a lot of time around water. So, it makes sense to stay away from standing water as much as you can, especially during the morning or dusk. It's very hard to prevent bites if you spend time in muddy areas or vegetation.
B Vitamins
Some people find that taking a B vitamin capsule or eating foods with high amounts of B vitamins can deter sandflies. Marmite or Vegemite spreads have lots of B vitamins and are popular in New Zealand and Australia -- two places with significant sandfly populations. Other foods high in B vitamins include fortified cereal, fish and nuts.
Change Schedule
No one wants to go on holiday and stay inside, but because sandflies can't see very well, they don't bite at night or in dark places. They also are more active in the early morning and late afternoon. If possible, adjust your hiking schedule to avoid being outside in times and places where sandflies are more intense.
