Rabbits can breed at an age of only 3 months, so it's important to figure out the sex of your bunnies to prevent unwanted baby rabbits from sibling matings. Mature males are the easiest to sex, but rabbits can be sexed at any age by examining the genital areas. Once you know the sexes of your rabbits, you can separate them into different cages to keep them apart or while you wait to have them neutered.
Instructions
1. Turn the rabbit over so that you are looking at the belly. It helps if you have someone holding the rabbit to keep it still.
2. Examine the area between the rabbit's hind legs. Male rabbits that have not been neutered will have testicles. The testicles are covered with bare skin, but sometimes the rabbit's fur will hide them. Push the fur out of the way and feel for them with your fingers. If the rabbit is young or female, you will need to examine the genital opening.
3. Look for a crease of furry skin under the rabbit's tail. Spread the folds apart to see the genital opening and the anus. The anus is nearer to the tail.
4. Apply gentle pressure with your fingers to either side of the first hole. If you see a small tube with a circular opening, your rabbit is male. If you see a slit or small pyramid shape of skin with a slit, it's female.
