Boys learn differently than girls do in some ways.
The discussion of whether boys and girls learn differently has often contributed some drama to the political domain. People question whether the distinctions between them are fair to make. However, research has suggested that there are certain ways in which boys and girls display different types of learning abilities.
Attention Span
In the classroom, paying attention is a crucial aspect to learning. When students are younger, there is a significant gap between how focused girls stay on task and how focused boys stay, with the latter group have a lower attention span. According to research by the National Association for Single Sex Public Education, the differences in attention spans are greater between a 7- year-old girl and a 7- year-old boy than they are in a 7-year-old girl and a 9-year-old girl.
Context Lessons
Often when a teacher begins a lesson, she provides some sort of context, whether it is a question to draw the students into the subject matter or a story about how the subject matter somehow relates to her own life. Females tend to enjoy these types of activities, since it further engages them in the lesson. However, males prefer to just get to the actual lesson and are bored by this additional lecture or activity.
Mathematics and Language
Mathematics and language often come to the forefront of such discussions. Females tend to have higher skills when it involves language, which leads them to be able to repeat or memorize a series of words or a paragraph better than males. On the other hand, men tend to have higher mathematical skills, and they have been found to perform better than women on tests that involve different sorts of spatial reasoning.
Academic Difficulties
Understanding how students process problems in school helps reveal ways they learn. For example, if a girl fails a test in one subject, she may tend to see it as a general failure and feel that her entire academic career is being compromised. However, a boy may see the failure as being related only to that particular subject and not his schooling as a whole.
