Mosquito Repellent Techniques

Repel mosquitoes naturally.

Mosquito is Spanish for "little fly." These tiny insects can cause big problems when they bite a human or an animal. Not only can you get a nasty red bump that itches, but it is also possible to contract a disease, such as dengue fever or malaria. Implementing a few repellent techniques can keep you and your pets from getting bit by the mosquitoes. Does this Spark an idea?

Pets

It is not recommended that you spray your pets with a chemical repellent. You can, however, create an all-natural mosquito repellent collar to place on your pets when they go outdoors. Fill an 8-oz. spray bottle with distilled water. Add 2 tbsp. of citronella essential oil and shake to stir. Spray generously on a cloth collar or a bandanna that you can tie around your pet's neck. Respray each time your pet goes outside to keep it from getting attacked by mosquitoes.

Spray for Clothing

North Dakota State University recommends using a permethrin-based insect repellent on your clothing only. This technique is best for hikes in the woods or spending long periods of time outdoors. Dress in long shirts and pants to minimize skin exposure. Spray the insect repellent directly on your clothes, and note the length of time the repellent will be effective. Reapply as needed.

Skin Rubs

Spending an hour outside gardening may not require dousing your clothing with a harsh chemical. In this case, an all-natural technique is preferred. Pour 2 oz. of 190-proof vodka in a small bowl. Squeeze 5 drops of rose geranium essential oil and 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil in the bowl and stir. Soak two cotton balls in the mixture. Wipe over any skin that is exposed. Make a fresh batch each time you go outside.

Get Rid of Standing Water

Mosquitoes breed in standing water. You can repel the mosquitoes by eliminating any standing water on your property. Look for water in rain gutters, flower pots or overturned trash can lids. If you have some sort of standing water that cannot be eliminated, such as a birdbath, use a mosquito dunk in it. Mosquito dunks are made out of Bt-israelensis, or Bt-i for short. Bt-i is a biological pesticide used to kill mosquito larvae.
