Natural Repellents Of Ticks

Ticks are parasites that survive not only on dogs and cats, but on other mammals including cows and humans. Tick bites are usually painless and develop a burning sensation, redness and itching over time. Some sensitive people develop rashes, swelling, shortness of breath, numbness and even paralysis. There are several chemical-based tick repellents that are effective in killing these pests. Some synthetic repellents such as DEET, however, are capable of causing serious side effects. Does this Spark an idea?

Garlic

Garlic contains natural sulfur that repels several pests, including fleas, mosquitoes, black flies and ticks. There are two kinds of ticks: soft-bodied argasidae and hard-bodied ixodidae. Spraying liquid garlic is safe for animals and humans, but is toxic to soft-bodied ticks. For ixodidae ticks, the smell of garlic drives them out and keeps them away as long as the odor lingers. Feed pets garlic biscuits and garlic pills to keep ticks away.

Almond Oil

Almond oil contains sulfur, which acts as a natural repellent. Combine 2 tbsp. almond oil and 10 to 25 drops of rose geranium essential oil. Shake the mixture and store it in a glass jar. Apply this solution on pets collars. It's also safe to dab on the skin or clothes in order to repel ticks.

Neem Oil

Neem oil is not only an effective treatment for ailments such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, it also repels ticks. Neem oil has a strong odor that ticks do not like. When a few drops of neem oil are dabbed on the skin of humans and pets, ticks stay away.

Tea Tree Oil

This oil is also effective at repelling ticks, along with other pests. Mix 2 cups of tea tree oil in 4 cups of water and pour in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on skin, pet's fur, clothes, and on furniture and carpets, to keep ticks away.
