Mosquito Repellent For Sensitive People

If you are sensitive to chemicals, you face a choice: Put on an insect repellent that irritates your skin, or risk getting bitten by mosquitoes. There are natural options that can protect you without triggering your sensitivities. Does this Spark an idea?

Natural Oils

Natural essential oils from rose geraniums or citrus fruits serve as alternatives to chemical mosquito repellents. Adding a few drops of essential oil to a spray bottle full of water creates a repellent spray that can be spritzed onto clothes and skin. Placing a few drops of undiluted essential oil on outdoor furniture will keep mosquitoes away.

Function

Rose geranium plants are used in South Africa to deter mosquitoes. The pungent odor of the plant, found in its oil, also repels ticks and fleas. Oils derived from lemons and oranges contain d-limonene, which also repels mosquitoes.

Considerations

Use of a spray of citrus oil and water on your skin can make you more photosensitive, necessitating long-sleeved shirts and long pants to avoid getting sunburned. Citrus oils can make cats sick.
