Most insect repellents on the market contain the chemical DEET. While DEET effectively keeps bugs like mosquitoes off of people, there are more eco-friendly options. Lemon grass and other citronella-based products provide more natural mosquito repellent. Does this Spark an idea?

Thai lemon grass plants contains citronella oil, which is a natural insect repellent, according to the Earth Easy website.


Using Lemon Grass


Break off a stalk of lemon grass and peel off the leaves. Bend the stem and rub it between your palms to release the juice. Rub the juice on exposed skin to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Plant Thai lemon grass around the perimeter of outdoor entertaining areas to repel mosquitoes.


Effectiveness


A study published on the CBS News website compares natural-based insect repellents against DEET products. According to the news network, natural products like lemon grass and citronella work by scent and must be reapplied more often than DEET-based products.
