Bugs and insects are often a source of fascination for children.
If you are planning a party for your child's upcoming birthday, or another event, consider a bug and insect theme. Purchase inexpensive decorations, such as plastic bugs, and use insect-related colors for the remainder of the decor and the invitations. Food is a very important part of children's birthday parties and events; insect and bug food activities will provide both entertainment and tasty snacks. Does this Spark an idea?
Ants-on-a-Log
Set out sections of celery and bowls of raisins, sunflower seeds, currants and peanut butter for children to create their own ants-on-a-log. These healthy snacks incorporate peanut butter, a favorite with children, alongside a vegetable, and fruit or seed toppings. Provide small spoons or spatulas for kids to scoop the peanut butter into the groove of the celery. While the raisins represent ants, the sunflower seeds can be used to create aphids-on-a-log and currants can be used to make gnats-on-a-log.
Dirt Cups
Dirt cups are a popular children's dessert that are perfect for a bug-themed party. Provide each child with a clear plastic cup and set out bowls of crushed chocolate cookies, pudding, whipped cream, gummy worms and gummy spiders. Have the kids layer the crushed cookies, gummy insects and pudding to create a tasty treat that resembles a cup of dirt, complete with creepy-crawlies. Top the creations with whipped cream and a few extra bugs on top.
Cracker Spiders
Have children create spiders from crackers and peanut butter. Set out the supplies on a covered table and guide the kids in spreading peanut butter on a cracker and laying four pieces of black string licorice across the top, peanut butter side up, to represent spider legs. Next, they should spread peanut butter on another cracker and sandwich them together. Peanut butter can then be used to stick raisin or candy eyes onto the spider, making it complete.
Bug Cupcakes
A cupcake-decorating station is sure to be a hit at a bug and insect-themed kids party. Bake a number of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes and set them out alongside green, yellow and red icing, small colored candies, sprinkles and licorice. Have the children decorate the cupcakes to resemble their favorite bugs; for example, red icing and chocolate candies can be used to create a cupcake that resembles a ladybug. The kids will love decorating and eating these insect creations.
