Medical Advice For Stopping Diarrhea & Vomiting

Medical Advice for Stopping Diarrhea & Vomiting

BRAT diet

Going on the BRAT diet is one of the first things many physicians will recommend for stopping diarrhea and vomiting. BRAT stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. Except for water, you shouldn't eat anything except those four options. The toast should be served without butter or other spreads. Continue on the BRAT diet only until the diarrhea and vomiting have stopped.

Over the Counter Medications

If you need to quickly stop diarrhea and vomiting, physicians often recommend non-prescription medications. Popular medicines that can be found at nearly any drug store include Immodium A-D, Kaopectate, Maalox, and Pepto Bismol. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) also advises that Pepto Bismol may be taken to help prevent vomiting and diarrhea. If, for example, you are traveling in an undeveloped country, consider taking Pepto Bismol before eating.

Temporarily Discontinue Food and Limit Liquids

If a patient is unable to keep anything down, a doctor often orders "NPO," which stands for Non Per Os. In other words, consume nothing by mouth. This means that you should not eat or drink anything except small amounts of water. This gives the body a chance to recover and heal without trying to process additional food. It should put an end to the diarrhea and vomiting.
