Ornamental Welding Projects

Beginners and experts alike can weld ornamental items.

Welding as a hobby or profession gives you the opportunity to create metal ornamental pieces that you can then use to decorate your home or garden. Welding is the process by which two metals are bound together with heat. Depending on your welding experience level, you can adjust the level of difficulty of any of these welding projects. Save money on ornamental welding projects by purchasing scrap metal from scrap yards or by using old metal items from your home or garage.

House Numbers

Displaying large house numbers on your home can help visitors navigate your neighborhood easier and find your house faster. Cut numbers out of scrap sheet metal and decorate them with found metal objects. Found objects may include kitchen utensils, tool handles or car parts. If you are a beginning welder, purchase house numbers at a home improvement store and then weld found objects on top of them. If you have significant welding experience, weld together metal objects without using a number base. Gather the metal items and arrange them to look like house numbers before you weld them together.

Wind Chime

Welding your own ornamental wind chime is a beginning welding project because it requires little planning and only very basic skills. Weld an ornamental item that will hold four to eight long strings with chimes attached to them. The chime holder can resemble an animal, house or person or it may simply be an arrangement of metal found objects. If you are a seasoned welder, consider making a more complex wind chime design that incorporates multiple materials such as glass, stone or wood along with the metal. Draw a plan for your chime before executing it. This will prevent you from having to use a hacksaw to remove welds. Hang the finished wind chime on your porch or in your backyard.

Garden Gate

Many homes have a pool or garden surrounded by a fence. Welding a gate is a fairly complicated welding project that requires significant planning and a high level of skill to execute. If you are an intermediate welder, however, you can use metal rods to decorate an existing gate. Decorate the top of the gate with scrollwork and undulating metal rods. If you are a beginning welder, attach found metal objects. Also, consider using sheet metal to make insect or animal statues and attach them to the ornamental gate.
