Goldfish live in a cold water environment, limiting what fish can be added to their tanks.
Goldfish are one of the best breeds of fish for first-time fish keepers. They are a coldwater fish that can grow as large as one-foot and live from 10 to 20 years with proper care. Because many tropical fish need warm water, there are not many compatible species of fish to mix with a goldfish. However, there are a number of certain types of goldfish that you can add to a community fish tank.
Black Moor Goldfish
The Black Moor goldfish originated in Asia but became available worldwide thanks to controlled breeding. The fish have a majority black color, some with metallic scales. These fish need a tank up to 30 gallons with a fine gravel bottom to thrive.
Ryukin Goldfish
Ryukin goldfish have a fat belly, curved backbone and long feathery fins. They are available in a variety of colors including red/black, red/white, red and calico. The Ryukin goldfish also sports a hump immediately behind the head on the upper back. Line the tank with a fine gravel bottom and cold-water plants.
Telescope Goldfish
Telescope goldfish have a striking trait in their eyes, large and protruding like a dragon. These fish originally hail from China and are available in red/white, calico and red telescope. When babies, the telescope fish have regular eyes but, after around three months the eyes bulge out. These fish dig and will scatter sand onto plants, injuring the plants. As a result, they need a fine gravel bottom in their tanks.
Sarasa Comet
The Sarasa comet is a bright red fish with white patches. This fish needs a much larger tank than other goldfish, up to 180 gallons. The Sarasa comet grows in proportion to its surroundings. This fish eats the roots of plants, so add large rocks to protect the bases of the tank's plants.
