Shallow Water Lifeguard Training

Shallow water pools may employ lifeguards certified for shallow water.

Shallow water lifeguard training is designed for those who wish to become lifeguards, but may not be the strongest swimmers. According to the American Lifeguard Association, the biggest difference between shallow water training and deep water training is that shallow water certification only requires 50 yards of continuous swimming.

Skills Covered

Lifeguard training covers a wide variety of skills including first-aid training, rescue procedures, CPR and treating neck, back and head injuries.

Certification and Employment

The American Lifeguard Association offers certification in both shallow water and deep water training. Those who complete shallow water certification may find employment at pools which do not feature deep water.

Courses

In addition to courses offered through the American Lifeguard Association, colleges, private companies and state departments of health may offer lifeguard training courses.
