Steam Milk For Lattes

Steam milk to create a froth for a caf latte.

Steamed milk changes the taste of a caf latte. Many gourmet coffee shops add steamed milk to their beverages. You can steam milk yourself at home to add to your own lattes with a steaming wand. The steaming wand will create froth in the milk, and it will steam the milk to your desired temperature. You can use any type of milk, but milk with a lower fat content will not burn as easily. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Fill a stainless steel pitcher halfway full with cold milk.

2. Turn the steam wand on and off to remove any excess condensation. Place the wand in the bottom of the pitcher.

3. Clip a frothing thermometer to the side of the stainless steel pitcher. This will allow you to monitor the temperature, so you do not scald the milk.

4. Turn the steam wand on high. Place the wand deep into the milk to prevent bubbles from being produced. Move the pitcher around to ensure that all of the milk froths evenly. You will hear a hissing sound and notice the froth rising to the top of the milk.

5. Move the wand farther up the pitcher as the milk heats. Remove the steaming wand from the pitcher once the milk reaches a temperature between 150 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the steamed milk into the coffee or espresso.

6. Clean the steam wand off with warm water and mild dish soap after you finish using it.
