Smells That Repel Insects

Fight nature with nature by repelling bugs with organic smells.

Insects can be a particularly irritating part of the ecosystem when they encroach upon your personal space. Instead of spraying harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, try employing a few natural ingredients to get the job done right. Many plants, herbs, and fruit species emit smells that repel insects without introducing any toxic elements into the environment. Safe and organic pest prevention methods keep both human and environmental health levels high, while keeping insect populations out of your home or backyard. Does this Spark an idea?

Basil

The smell of basil naturally wards off flies and mosquitoes. Keep a few potted basil plants in your kitchen during the summer months to keep the flies out of doors. Plant a border of basil around your backyard to stave off swarms of flies and mosquitoes while you are trying to sunbathe or host a backyard barbecue.

Lemongrass

Andropogon flexuosus, also known as lemongrass, is a natural mosquito repellent. The smell of lemongrass is most potent and effective in the form of a concentrated oil. Purchase a bottle of lemongrass oil and dilute it slightly with rubbing alcohol or purified water. Then rub directly into the skin for use as a personal insect repellent during your next camping trip, instead of using toxic chemicals.

Cucumbers

Ants have a natural dislike for the smell of cucumber, which makes it an effective guardian of your home against these tiny intruders. Slice up the cucumbers to release their fragrance, and set the slices out at the ants' various points of entry around the house. Cockroaches also hate the smell of cucumbers. Place plenty of slices in the infested areas to make roaches uncomfortable enough to leave.

Catnip

Catnip is an herb that shifts cats into a euphoric state, but it has the opposite effect on cockroaches. Place breathable bags of catnip around your home to keep roaches out. You can also steep catnip in boiling water to make a tea. Apply the catnip tea to all the baseboards and cabinets around your home. The smell will keep cockroaches from climbing in through the cracks or eating your unsealed foods.
