Mosquito Crafts For Kids

The female mosquito needs blood to develop her eggs.

Mosquitoes are pesky little bugs that like to dwell in damp areas and swarm at dusk. The mosquito is responsible for many lumpy, itchy bumps on the legs and arms of summer outdoorsmen. A mosquito bite can be serious, as mosquitoes can be carriers of malaria and other blood borne illnesses. Teach children about mosquitoes with fun crafts.

Cardstock and Pipe-cleaner Mosquito

Use cardstock and pipe cleaners to create a mosquito. Cut out the body and head shape of a mosquito from black poster board. Glue the head and the body together and add white cardstock wings. Glue six black pipe cleaners to the backside and bend to indicate legs. Add a black pipe cleaner antenna and glue on some googly eyes to complete the mosquito.

Mosquito Antenna and Eyes Head Band

Make a headband by cutting a piece of construction paper in half lengthwise and taping the ends together. Wind a black pipe cleaner around a pencil so it forms a spring shape. Make two of these and glue them to the headband to create antenna. Glue a pompom to the end of the two pipe cleaners. Draw eyes on a piece of white paper and cut them out. Glue the eyes to the headband.

Pop-pom Mosquito

Create three pom-poms, one medium size and two smaller, using yarn. Stack pom-poms with the medium pom-pom at the bottom to be the body of the mosquito. Glue pom-poms together. Cut a red chenille stem for the mouth. Glue mouth to the middle pom-pom and glue eyes to the top pom-pom; together they form the head. Use three chenille stems (pipe cleaners) to form legs and white tissue paper for wings.

Styrofoam Mosquito

Use three (two small and one medium sized) Styrofoam balls and other craft materials to form a mosquito. Use tooth picks to attach the Styrofoam balls together. The larger ball should be at the bottom to form the body and the top two create the torso and head. Use chenille stems to create legs and googly eyes for the eyes. Make a mouth out of a red chenille stem. You can paint the Styrofoam balls black prior to doing the project for a more authentic look.
