Sage Deodorant
The anti-bacterial action of sage, combined with its strong camphor scent, makes it a suitable deodorant for either men or women, especially those seeking to reduce the amount of chemical they apply to their bodies on a daily basis (many commercial deodorants contain aluminum). Sage deodorants are available from local health food stores. To make your own deodorant (approximately 6 months' supply), combine 5 or 6 tablespoons of coconut oil, ¼ cup each of baking soda and arrowroot or cornstarch powder and 3 drops of sage oil. Apply sparingly. Sage oil is a very concentrated product and must never be taken internally. It is contraindicated for pregnant women and those suffering from epilepsy.
Sage Toothpaste and Mouthwash
Natural sage toothpastes and mouthwashes contain no triclosan or diethylene glycol, two chemical constituents found in commercial oral care products. Sage toothpastes and mouthwashes rely on the herb's deodorizing and anti-bacterial actions for effectiveness. Sage toothpaste is available in the natural health section of many supermarkets and most health food stores. To make your own toothpaste, add a drop of sage oil to your toothpaste or mix 1 drop of sage oil with 100 grams of baking soda or salt (store in an air-tight container). Apply to the teeth with a damp toothbrush.
Sage Shampoo
Natural sage shampoo soothes irritated scalps and promotes healthy hair without using harsh chemicals. Sage is also an ingredient of natural remedies for dandruff and covering gray hair (requires regular use over a period of weeks). Sage is naturally rich in many vitamins and trace elements beneficial to hair, including B-complex vitamins like thiamin, folic acid, riboflavin and pyridoxine, vitamin A and beta carotene, zinc (used in commercial anti-dandruff shampoos), potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, iron and copper. Choose from a variety of sage shampoos available from natural beauty care stores or make your own by mixing 4 ounces of plain or scented Castile liquid soap with 4 drops of sage oil.
