A health safety coordinator plays an important role in an organization. His responsibilities include creating, implementing and maintaining standards for health, workplace safety and environmental safety. He also educates company personnel about the importance of safety, holds safety meetings and prepares and hands out safety announcements.
Education
The coordinator should have several years of safety coordination experience. He should have at least a high school education and preferably a college degree.
Skills
Health safety coordinators should have excellent oral and written communications skills since his responsibilities include training others in safety practices and writing reports for mid-level and senior managers. The safety coordinator also needs good computer skills such as word processing and PowerPoint development for group presentations. He also needs excellent interpersonal and persuasive skills. If the coordinator has a staff, he should excel at motivating others and have the ability to plan, manage and control those reporting to him.
Knowledge
In-depth knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration's standards and guidelines is required as well as knowledge of state and local safety guidelines. He should also know the proper procedure for disposing of hazardous material and plan for and manage events surrounding a local or national disaster.

Since past performance provides an indication of future success, consider a candidate's work history. Have him describe a specific emergency situation and how he dealt with it.
