Screen Deck Ideas

Adding a screen to your deck can add privacy or keep the bugs away.

Whether you're looking for a little privacy or just trying to keep the bugs away, adding a screen to your deck is one option for making your outdoor space more livable. However, if you want to enclose an existing deck with traditional screen, remember your deck will need to be square or rectangular in shape for the screen to fit tight. Does this Spark an idea?

Keep It Simple

If lowering the number of bug bites you get is your main priority, keep it simple by installing traditional screening around your deck. For a basic weekend project, you can purchase a prefabricated enclosure kit with everything you need from your local home improvement store, or you can do it yourself from scratch. If you decide to work from scratch, building individual screen panels you can attach to your deck will save you time in the long run. Remember to purchase your screen before you build your panels to avoid not having large enough pieces to cover the panels later.

Paint It

If you already have a screened deck and you're looking for more curb appeal, think about painting the outside of your screens. Using either outdoor or another type of waterproof paint, you or a contractor can create an artistic image on the outside of your screens. To make your deck blend into the scenery, choose images of plants, trees or other items near your deck. For eye-popping appeal, try something unusual, like a tropical scene or a Tuscan farnhouse.

Add Privacy

If you're looking for privacy more than anything else, you can buy or create a wooden outdoor wall or screen with lattice work to surround your deck. Unlike traditional deck screening, privacy deck screening comes in panels, like a fence, and doesn't typically need a roof once completed. For added privacy, grow climbing plants around your deck to cover the lattice work while maintaining air flow.

Go Ornamental

If you want something other than traditional deck screening for your deck, go ornamental. Typically made of iron or other metals, ornamental screens come in both simple and elaborate designs. Usually purchased as panels, ornamental screens come in a variety of sizes and often can be combined with a roof, depending on the type of screen.
