Mosquito Garden Spray

Mosquitoes like to rest on vegetation during the day.

Female mosquitoes bite humans for blood, causing itching and irritation. They also sometimes transmit serious diseases, such as viral encephalitis. Mosquitoes are active at night, and like to rest on vegetation during the day. Spraying the mosquitoes in your garden with insecticides reduces their numbers and resulting bites. Does this Spark an idea?

Types

Insecticides that can control mosquitoes in the garden include cyfluthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, permethrin, allethrin, malathion, carbaryl and chlorpyrifos. They come in ready-to-use and concentrated formulations. These insecticides kill mosquitoes upon direct contact.

Application

A hose-end sprayer can effectively distribute insecticide throughout the garden. Focus the spraying on areas where mosquitoes like to rest, including shaded areas, weeds, lower limbs of trees and shrubs.

Efficacy

While garden sprays reduce the number of mosquitoes, they don't work very well outdoors, because the insecticide particles disperse rapidly. Insecticide sprays generally only provide temporary protection against mosquitoes, because they don't keep new mosquitoes from entering the area.
