Make Mosquito Nets

Protect yourself with a mosquito net.

Malaria affects 250 million people and kills nearly one million people annually. Mosquitoes that transmit malaria are most active from dusk to dawn. You can greatly reduce your risk of contracting malaria by constructing a mosquito net around your bed that will prevent mosquitoes from biting you while you sleep.

Instructions

1. Measure your mattress or sleeping surface in order to calculate fabric requirements. Purchase 1.25 times more white cotton sheeting than the size of your mattress. Purchase enough mosquito netting to go 1.5 to 2 times around your bed.

2. Trim all selvages (edges woven during manufacture to prevent fabric from unraveling) from the white cotton sheeting.

3. Cut cotton sheeting into a piece a little larger than the size of the mattress.

4. Make loops from the white sheeting.

5. Pin loops all around the cotton sheet, 2 feet apart from each other.

6. Cut a 6-inch wide strip of cotton sheeting, long enough to circle the cotton sheet. Encircle the main cotton sheet with this strip and sew it on.

7. Sew loops onto the main white sheet, reinforcing them by sewing back and forth over the loops.

8. Attach the mosquito netting to the bottom of this canopy by sewing one edge of the netting to the bottom edge of the canopy.

9. Seam edges of mosquito net.

10. Run lines overhead the bed or create a wooden frame that can be suspended from the ceiling.

11. Attach ties from the loops.

12. Hang the mosquito canopy from the overhead lines or from the ties on the wooden frame.
