Patio Curtain Ideas

Patio curtains add extra privacy to your yard. The fabric panels are typically used with a patio that has a roof or overhand because the curtains are attached to the bottom of the roof. When you want more privacy or protection from bugs, close the curtains. Open the curtains to let more light into the space. Patio curtain ideas require little money, which lets you replace the curtains once a year or more frequently if the sun bleaches the fabric. Does this Spark an idea?

Make Vintage Curtains

Vintage fabric is sometimes pricey, but thrift stores and yard sales offer cheaper pieces of fabric. Old pillowcases, bandanas, handkerchiefs and even aprons are found at inexpensive prices. Once you have your fabric, arrange the pieces into different panels. Create enough panels to fully circle the patio. Install metal hooks around the bottom of the roof, and use the hooks with curtain rods. Sew the pieces of fabric together to make the panels, and place a curtain rod at the top of each panel. Wrap the end of the fabric around the rod, and sew along the edge to create a pocket. Hang the curtains around the patio. Tie any fabric scraps or remnants around the curtains to keep the curtains closed.

Hang Mosquito Netting

Mosquito netting is a type of woven, gauzy material. The fabric has a light and open feel that lets sun and light shine through while keeping bugs out. Mosquito netting comes in neutral shades, such as khaki, light brown and white. The colors work with nearly any type of design style, including shabby chic and more modern decorating styles. Attach hooks at each corner of the roof, and hang the material from the hooks. Gather the mosquito netting, and drape it over to the next hook. When you want privacy, pull the netting down.

Use Old Sheets

A quick and inexpensive idea for patio curtains is to use old sheets you already own. As the sheets are pulled back during the day, you can use stained sheets. The sheets are only open during the night, and the lack of light hides the stains. Attach curtain rods to the edge of your roof, and hang the curtains from the rods. Wrap the end of the curtain around the rod, and secure it in place with safety pins. When you're ready to change the look of your patio, remove the safety pins and replace the sheets with new pieces of fabric.
