Set Up Camp For Civil War Reenactment

Setting up camp in a Civil War reenactment can be a thrilling time, and a way to make history come alive. Read this elearn more.

Instructions

1. Decide what sort of event you will be holding: will it be just a Living History event where the purpose is to show how people lived in encampments during the Civil War, or do you intend to reenact a battle or two as well?

2. Make certain that clean water is available to all at the camp sites for the Civil War Reenactment.

3. Provide plenty of firewood for the fires-even more when the weather is expected to grow cold.

4. Rent porta-potties for the event. You can never have enough. Rent some that are handicapped accessible to allow the women Civil War reenactors with their hooped shirts enough room to go to the bathroom with some semblance of ease. Plan to have enough porta-potties not only for the reenactors but for the public as well. Schedule them to be serviced more than once during the event.

5. Hire security for the event. Unfortunately, theft is a problem during such events. Weapons and other Civil War items can be stolen from the reenactors, not only from the camps but from the battlefields as well.

6. Give meals to the reenactors. Either the host of the event or the person who organized the Civil War reenactment should plan to provide at least two meals. A large dinner and a breakfast can be two of them.

7. Decide whether to provide black powder or money to those who register early for the Civil War reenactment.

8. Hold a ball on one of the nights so that everyone can show off their Civil War era finery.

9. Have showers available for use. If the Civil War reenactment is held near a school or some such facility, ask permission to use the showers during the event. As a Civil War reenactment can bring a lot of publicity to any facility, permission is often granted.

10. Give the reenactors plenty of straw for their camps. Straw can be used to stuff mattresses, to form the floor of the tent, or to fill in the space between the tent and the ground.

11. Hold the event on a fair amount of acreage if you plan to hold a battle or skirmish during the Civil War reenactment. Even more acreage is needed should you decide to include cavalry regiments.
