What Chemicals Stop Bees by Swimming Pools?
Summertime brings two things that don't mix together well, swimming pools and bees. Luckily there are a number of ways to keep the two separate. Some people prefer natural ways of keeping the insects away from their pools, but for anyone inclined to use chemical repellents, there are plenty of those available as well.
Deet
Deet was developed in 1946 for the U.S. Army and introduced to the public in 1957. It is a general insect repellent which is used in many bee repellents. It is safe to humans and does not dissolve in water. It can be sprayed on clothing and skin. However it should not be ingested and therefore you should not use it near food. Bee repellents with Deet can be used around the pool and on bathing suites and are an effective way to keep bees away from your swimming pool.
Deet-Free Bee Repellents
Chemical repellents that are Deet-free include Bee Ready Safety Spray. Bee Ready is an effective bee repellent that boasts that it is Deet-free. It claims, therefore, to be safer on the environment. If you are looking for a Deet-free product, Bee Ready is recommended by exterminators. Most repellents that are Deet-free are natural repellents that are chemical-free.
Soap and Water
There is one more chemical to consider when trying to keep bees away from your pool: soap. Regular household soap, especially detergent, mixed with water will turn bees off. Keeping a spray bottle filled with soapy water handy and using the "mist" preference on a bee is useful in repelling the insect and keeping it away from your pool. The advantage in using soap is that it is known to be safer than any other chemical deterrent. The disadvantage is that it only keeps a bee or two away at a time. It won't generally repel a large number of bees.
