Method
Application of malathion involves an ultra-low volume spray, which dispenses fine aerosol droplets that kill mosquitoes on contact. A rate of 0.23 pounds of active ingredient per acre can effectively control mosquito populations.
Warning
If application of malathion exceeds the recommended rate, it can overstimulate the nervous system, leading to nausea, dizziness or confusion. Severe poisoning can cause convulsions, respiratory paralysis and death.
Wildlife Toxicity
Malathion breaks down quickly in the environment and has low toxicity effects on birds and mammals. Besides mosquitoes, malathion also affects other insects, including beneficial insects such as honeybees.
