Will Peppermint Oil Help Kill Fleas

Fleas feed off the blood of animals and humans, making them uncomfortable and itchy. Peppermint oil is a safe alternative to manufactured flea sprays or drops and repels the fleas instead of killing them. Does this Spark an idea?

Use on Animals

Peppermint oil added to your pet's shampoo will help repel fleas as the scent is too strong for them. Just add a few drops and shake well to distribute the oil throughout the shampoo. Pure peppermint oil, such as essential oil, works best as those made for cooking are diluted with other ingredients. Bathe your pet once a week with the peppermint oil shampoo during the peak flea season.

Use on Carpet

Soak a cotton ball in pure peppermint oil and add it to your vacuum cleaner. The heat generated from the vacuum will release the oil into your carpet and repel the fleas from the house.

Considerations

Add lavender and tea tree oils as well as the peppermint to pet shampoo to make a flea repellent that repels fleas and soothes the skin. Check your pet's skin for any signs of irritation after the first use of the essential oil and discontinue use if signs are present.
