Indoor Fly Repellent

Flies breed, live and feed on filth. Controlling them indoors involves a combination of tactics that includes eliminating their points of entry and destroying them if they do manage to get inside using repellents that you can either buy or make yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Chemical Repellents

Indoor fly repellents should be used only if other approaches have failed. The University of California suggests using a non-residual chemical spray that contains pyrethrin but adds that chemicals aren't necessary or recommended.

Fly Traps

Bug zappers control flies by attracting them to a grid that gives off ultraviolet light and kills them with a high-voltage current. Smaller versions of the large outdoor models are available for indoor use. Baited fly traps can be effective if placed near a bright light and the bait is kept moist.

Homemade Repellents

A few drops of dish detergent mixed with warm water destroys flies, while citronella candles and essential oils, such as eucalyptus, repels them. Flypaper is effective, as is your handy flyswatter. Use care not to swat flies near food sources to prevent contamination.

Prevention/Solution

Keep flies out by repairing window and door screens, and not leaving them open during hot weather when they are most active. The Illinois Department of Public Health stresses sanitation as key to controlling flies, which includes keeping trash covered, and promptly removing any decaying plant or animal matter.
