Plants That Deter Wasps

A group of wasps is called a colony.

Wasps are insects are in the same order as bees and ants, an order with over 100,000 different species. Some wasps feed on other insects while others eat fruit and nectar or scavenge for dead animals and insects. Not all wasps create nests, but those that do can be a nuisance to homeowners as the insects can nest in trees, soil or in the home. There are some plants that may keep wasps away from your house. Does this Spark an idea?

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus oil is used in natural repellent formulas and planting it may help to repel wasps. Eucalyptus trees can grow in most sunny environments that do not get below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The repellant properties of eucalyptus have been proven in crickets, mosquitoes, and no-see-ums and by combining eucalyptus oil with menthol and citronella you can create a strong repellent mix with which to treat your plants.

Wormwood

Wormwood is also known as a natural source of the substance absinthe, which is poisonous to insects, other plants and humans. Spreading dried wormwood cuttings around your soil will keep insects away but it also may stunt the growth of some plants in your garden. Planting wormwood requires full sun and well-drained soil and it should not be planted near beans, fennel, peas, sage and caraway.

Mint

This extremely invasive species of plant has a pleasant smell and it may deter wasps in its plant or oil form. Mint oil has been used in several kinds of natural insecticides and the plant grows well in both shade and sun. Plant the mint in a pot and keep it pruned or else it the plant is likely to take over your entire garden.

Other Plants

There are several other plants that may repel wasps with which you may want to experiment. Lemongrass has been used in its oil form to kill wasps and other bugs. Peppermint is effective in repelling bees, ants, mosquitoes and flies and it may also help with wasps. Planting cedar trees can deter fleas and mosquitoes and it may relieve you of your wasp problems as well.
