Landscaping A Custom Fire Pit

Relaxing by the fire pit can be very rewarding.

Having a fire pit in your yard is a simple pleasure that can provide a place to sit and relax or entertain guests. Creating an aesthetically pleasing area around your fire pit will add to the beauty of it. It is relatively easy to create a lovely and relaxing area in your yard in an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way. Creating a simple garden around the fire pit with insect-repellent plants and building a walk-way to the fire pit are two simple ways to customize and beautify this lawn feature. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clear the area around your custom fire pit. Remove any weeds, undesired plants or grass that is creeping in around the fire pit area. Rake the area several times until it is completely clear of debris.

2. Select natural stones native to your yard or surrounding area. Choose stones of different shades and shapes. Place the stones in a semicircle around the fire pit area. Leave an opening that will allow you access to the fire pit for feeding and stoking the fire.

3. Remove the grass along a path leading away from your fire pit. Place blue stone or slate in a line leading to the fire pit area and the opening in the stone circle. Plant ground cover or crawling plants in the spaces between the stones--this is a simple way to make the stone path look like part of your natural lawn.

4. Remove the grass from the outside of your stone circle to create a garden for insect-repelling plants. Clear a space about 1 to 2 feet wide in which to plant. Rake the area and level the ground.

5. Plant insect-repellent plants in the cleared area. Select two to three kinds of plants that work well together and are aesthetically pleasing, such as anise, basil and mint.

6. Cut an edge around the outside of your garden. Spread bark mulch around the insect-repellent plants about an inch deep. Place stones around the outside of the garden or simply lay mulch up to the edge to create a sharp look.

7. Place benches and chairs around the fire pit on either side of the stone path. Install bushes and shrubbery around the seating area if you desire increased privacy.
