Cat owners know what an enormous treat catnip can be for their family feline. Putting some fresh catnip inside a favorite toy or sprinkling it on their scratching post can virtually have them jumping with glee. This prevalent cat favorite however, can be a beneficial herb for dog health as well. You won't get the same response as you do with your kitty, but, health-wise, your dog will thank you.
Nervousness
Using catnip in your dog's food or water can help relieve stress in your pet.
If your dog gets nervous and anxious in certain situations such as traveling long distances, catnip can help relax your pet before the trip. This herb has a soothing sedativelike effect when given to your dog--either dried in his food or by putting fresh cut leaves in his water bowl. For severe or extended amounts of stress, catnip can be purchased in liquid form for everyday use in your pet's water or food.
Diarrhea
Catnip can be used for relief of diarrhea and gas in your pet.
If your dog suffers from occasional diarrhea or gas, catnip can offer some relief from these symptoms. Catnip can calm spasmodic stomach muscles as well as provide anti-gas properties when added to your pet's diet. However, if your dog has a bloody stool, is vomiting, bloated, or has a fever, you should take him to your veterinarian as soon as possible. Catnip is intended only for mild cases of diarrhea and gas.
Antiseptic
Catnip can be used as a poultice for minor skin irritations on dogs.
Catnip contains thymol which has antiseptic properties. Making a poultice from catnip can be used quite effectively for minor wounds and skin irritations on your dog. Make a poultice by crushing the catnip leaves and warming in a small amount of fresh water. You then apply the mixture to a soft cloth, place it on the infected area, and cover with a bandage. You can also simply crush the leaves and place them directly on the wound then bandage as usual.
