What Repels And Attracts Asian Beetles In The House

Asian beetles are lighter in color than other ladybugs.

Asian beetles are not dangerous, but they can be very pesky because they travel in very large numbers. They often take shelter in homes during the fall and winter months. Not everything that attracts them is known, but there are a few known attractors -- along with ways to repel them. Does this Spark an idea?

House Color

Houses painted in light colors tend to attract Asian beetles. White and yellow-colored houses make the location more attractive for the insects to land on and then enter the house. Painting the house darker can make it less attractive, but this can be a time-consuming process just to repel bugs that are only slightly annoying pests -- especially if you don't want a dark-colored home.

Light

Asian beetles frequently and quickly attract their own kind to one location. Once a small group takes shelter, they emit a pheromone that draws more beetles to that location. This is a big reason why you should prepare your home to repel bugs before their migratory season starts.

Light

Light greatly attracts Asian beetles. They will head toward any well-lit place within the home. You can, however, use this to your advantage. Light traps placed in dark locations will attract the bugs and imprison them -- a good option for those who want to catch them without killing them. You can also lay glue traps in brightly lit areas.

Sealing Cracks

The best method of keeping beetles out of your home is blocking them out. Check for open cracks around your house's exterior -- especially around the doors, windows and foundation -- and seal them with caulking material. At the same time, look for similar cracks and openings in the interior, and seal them to prevent beetles that may be within the walls from getting into the rooms.

Vacuuming/Pesticides

Vacuuming is the best way to get rid of the bugs once inside. Pesticides are not that effective; they won't kill the beetles within the walls, where most of them live, and will leave dangerous chemicals circulating in the air unless you open doors or windows, which allows even more bugs the chance to enter. The best pesticide use is a residual pyrethrin-based substance applied to the outer walls in late September, repelling the bugs as they approach the house.
