Kitty Cat Crafts For Preschoolers

Many preschoolers find kittens very intriguing.

Most preschoolers love animals and can enjoy making crafts that resemble the furry creatures. When organizing a lesson plan about kittens, allow your preschoolers to enjoy some hands-on crafts that will help them express their creativity and use their imagination. Keep the crafts simple to avoid the young children with short attention spans from becoming bored.

Paper

Create a fuzzy kitten craft by printing coloring pages of kittens. Give one picture to each child and have him color the picture with crayons. Have the preschoolers dab small dots of glue over the picture and smear with a paintbrush. Give each child some white cotton balls. Tell him to pull the cotton balls apart creating small pieces to glue on the picture. This will make the kitten furry. If you do not mind a mess, allow the children to paint the pictures and add the cotton while the paint is wet.

Socks

Make an easy sock kitten craft by giving each child a polyester sock and having her turn it inside out, which gives the sock the fuzzy texture of a kitten. Put a rubber band about 3 inches down around the closed in of the sock to create the kitten's head. Give her googly eyes and pink felt or craft foam to create the kitten's face. Cut some black chenille stems for whiskers. For added decoration, give each child a small pink baby sock to create a mouse to go with the kitten. Use felt to create the ears and mouth and glue on googly eyes.

Rocks

Use round stones or a set of garden rocks from a garden store. Preschoolers can paint a picture of a kitten on the rock or turn the rock into a kitten. Give each child a kitten picture to use as a guide, and provide acrylic paint. Alternatively, have the child paint the face of a kitten on one end of the rock. Help him glue to small rocks above the face to resemble the kitten's ears. Another idea is to have preschoolers draw kitten faces on small round rocks.

Puppets

Have your preschoolers make kitten hand puppets using small paper sacks. For an easy idea, have each preschooler draw a kitten face on the flap of the sack. She can place her hand inside the sack to make the kitten "talk." Give the puppet more detail by having the child color the entire sack with paint. After it dries, she can draw on the face and add chenille stem whiskers to the kitten. Add a construction paper tail to the back of the sack, or use construction paper instead of paint to cover the sack.
