Keep mosquitoes away with mosquito candles.
Mosquitoes are common garden pests that can ruin any outdoor activity, from a picnic to a baseball game to just spending some time on your patio. Whether you're allergic to mosquitoes or just annoyed, getting rid of mosquitoes during the summer months can be a full-time job. While any candles that generates smoke can be successfully used to ward off mosquitoes, citronella candles have oils in them that are a strong mosquito deterrent. Does this Spark an idea?
About
Citronella is an essential oil that is obtained from the leaves and stems of the Cymbopogon species of plants, which is a family of grasses. The grass is then dried and combined with oil to produce the citronella products on the market as insect repellent. Forty percent of citronella is produced in China and Indonesia.
How It Works
Citronella candles work in two ways. First, the wicks in most brands of citronella candles are coated to produce more smoke than a normal candle woould. Smoke is a natural mosquito deterrent, keeping the insects away from anything in the smoke's radius. Secondly, the wax that is infused with citronella produces a distinctive odor. This odor makes it difficult for mosquitoes and other insects to locate a host, and if they can't find you, they can't bite you!
Small and Medium Citronella Candles
Citronella candles come with many different options, and the best citronella candle for you is best determined by the area that you are trying to make mosquito free. For instance, keeping a picnic table free from mosquitoes may best be done by lighting citronella tea lights and placing them around the table. Concentrating many small candles is a small area works just as effectively as using one large candle. Medium citronella candles are also available in various stylish containers, such as lanterns and bucket, and can be both decorative and useful.
Large Citronella Candles
If you are trying to keep your entire backyard or another large outdoor space free from mosquitoes, it may be best to get large citronella torches, which stand independently at about 3 to 4 feet high and can be placed at intervals around your yard. These torches are then filled with a citronella oil and the wicks are lit to produce smoke and the citronella aroma. Because these candles stand taller than other candles, they can be more efficient for keeping a large area mosquito-free.
Other Considerations
Citronella candles have a very low toxicity when compared with other mosquito prevention techniques. Because of this, they are safer for the environment, pets and children.
