Plants To Repel Bugs From My Aboveground Swimming Pool

Certain plants in your pool area will help deter some insects.

Landscaping around an aboveground pool can be both beautiful and beneficial if you choose plants that ward off pesky insects. Insects and relaxing around your pool do not go together in a pleasant way for most of us; spraying and bug repellents are tough on the environment and your pocketbook. Incorporate plants in your landscaping that will let nature do as much of this job for you as possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Ubiquitous Mosquitoes

The mosquito may be the most unpleasant insect we encounter outdoors. Several varieties of plants help repel mosquitoes; they are not only effective but ornamental as well. Lemon balm, an herb, is especially effective against mosquitoes. The appealing lemon scent and the bushlike shape will make a good addition to the landscaping. Lavender is another great-smelling option that looks wonderful as a landscape plant. Citronella grass is an obvious and attractive choice, as are catnip and rosemary. Plant groupings of these plants for an attractive and functional garden around your pool.

Mighty Marigold and Mints

Gardeners consider marigolds a workhorse of a plant. Their strong scent keeps many pests at bay, and the brightly colored blooms make an attractive border for any landscaping bed. Marigolds' pungent fragrance repels mosquitoes, beetles and several types of worms.

In the mint family, spearmint and mountain mint are excellent choices as insect repellents. Spearmint repels flies, ants and mosquitoes. Mountain mint repels ticks. To increase their effectiveness, crush the leaves in your hand and spread the scent through the air.

Other Helpers

Tansy, an attractive-looking plant, deters beetles and mosquitoes. Tansy mixes well with mint in landscaping; together, they do wonders to keep ants away. Garlic chives add attractive purple blooms to landscaping as well as repelling aphids, mites and mosquitoes. Basil repels mosquitoes and flies while lavender not only repels mosquitoes but also fleas, moths and slugs.
