Permethrin is a chemical used to exterminate mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, silverfish, cockroaches and other pests. This is useful because these insects carry many diseases. But caution must be exercised when applying the product because it can be toxic to fish and other species. Careful mixing of permethrin makes it easy to apply and reduces the risk of possible run-off, which can poison unintended areas.
To Control Ticks and Fleas
To control ticks and fleas, mix one part of permethrin with 99 parts water. Spray the animal or dip it in the mixture. Make sure you wear gloves and do not apply to animals that are younger than 12 weeks old.
Treating Indoor Surface Areas
If the insect infestation is severe, dilute 1 part permethrin to 19 parts water and spray the surface of the affected area. Be careful to cover any food processing implements, such as stoves and mixers. For continuing maintenance, the formula can be decreased to 1 part permethrin to 39 parts water.
Control Mosquitoes
In an effort to control mosquitoes and other flying insects, it's recommended that you mix one part permethrin with 19 parts water. By spraying the areas where these insects might alight, like doors, window ledges and door frames, you can rid the area of these pests.
