What Herbs Repel Flying Insects

There are many herbs that can be used to naturally repel flying insects.

Walking outside during a humid summer afternoon without any protection is a great way to get stung or bitten by a flying insect. There are ways, however, in which you can protect yourself and those whom you love. These ways don't require investing in inorganic and potentially unsafe sprays and chemicals. All you need are some good, old-fashioned herbs like pennyroyal, sweet woodruff, rosemary, wormwood and lemongrass.

Pennyroyal for Flies and Fleas

Pennyroyal is an herb from the mint family that can be used to ward off flying insects such as flies and jumping insects such as fleas. However, pennyroyal is toxic and cannot be consumed or applied on your skin. To deal with flies, you should wrap a few sprinkles of it in a paper towel and then place the towel on a shelf or desk. As for fleas, you can either sprinkle it underneath your bedsheets or, in the case of a pet, underneath your pet's bedding.

Sweet Woodruff for Moths

Sweet woodruff is an herb that naturally repels moths. If you have many moths in your garden, you can plant sweet woodruff around doors and windows to discourage the moths from entering your home. If they've already invaded, you can apply dried sweet woodruff in your closets to prevent them from reproducing.

Rosemary for Mosquitoes

Rosemary is a perennial herb that has been used for centuries to ward off annoying mosquitoes. Its leaves ooze an oil that mosquitoes find appealing. If you have a mosquito problem in your garden, plant rosemary, break off some leaves and rub them all over your face and body. You can purchase rosemary essential oil, which is a mixture of rosemary and olive oil, and use it instead.

Wormwood for Wasps

Wormwood is an herb that is capable of growing under the full sun or in partial shade. It contains a toxic, water-soluble substance known as absinthe that is safe for human skin but not human ingestion. As such, you can rub it on your body. If there are many wasps around your garden, you can just plant it.

Lemongrass for Bees

Lemongrass is a tropical herb that functions as a natural bee repellant. It can easily be grown in your lawn, and it will produce narrow leaves with a penetrating, lemon-like fragrance that bees absolutely loathe.
