Organic Mosquito Repellent Lemon

Lemons contain a natural insect repellent.

The whine of a mosquito next to your ear can ruin an outdoor excursion. You do not need chemicals to keep the pests away. You can create an organic mosquito repellent using lemons and water. Does this Spark an idea?

Lemon Repellent

Organic mosquito repellents can be made with lemon essential oil. Placing a few drops of the oil in a spray bottle full of water will create a mosquito repellent spray that can be used on skin, clothing and dogs. Use a couple drops of oil on a beach towel or the cushion of a patio chair to further deter mosquitoes while you are outside.

Function

Lemons contain a compound called d-limonene, which is concentrated in their rinds. D-limonene is a natural insect repellent that works on mosquitoes. Lemon essential oils contain d-limonene and are easy to work with. You can also grate lemon peels and sprinkle them around areas where you spend time outdoors to deter mosquitoes.

Considerations

Citrus oils are safe for humans and dogs, but make cats ill. Do not spray a cat with the lemon repellent or use lemon oil on its bedding. Wear long sleeves and pants if you use the lemon spray on your skin. It can increase photosensitivity and your risk of sunburn.
