Tell A Male From A Female Betta Fish

Betta fish are known for their bright colors, large fins and flowing tails. They come in every color of the rainbow and are just as impressive. Bettas also come in a variety of species, each with its own unique, lustrous tail. If you know what to look for, you can successfully identify male and female bettas.

Instructions

1. Look at the fish's fins and tails. A male betta's fins are long and flow beautifully in the water. Their fins can grow to be quite large, as this is what they use to fend off unwanted fish. They "flare" when they see another male fish, even if it is their reflection in a mirror. Male bettas are famous for this defensive posture.

Female bettas will have shorter fins and tails than male bettas. Most females are less vibrant than their male counterparts.

2. Look at their bodies. Male bettas tend to have longer, larger bodies than females.

Females have an ovipositor, which is a small white tube that protrudes slightly from their underside.

3. Observe their behavior. Male bettas are more aggressive than females and do not enjoy the company of many other types of fish.

Females have more personality and are spunkier than males. They can move around quicker than males because of their shorter fins. Females can also live with other females, but males must be kept alone.
