What Repels Love Bugs And Flying Insects

Nothing can ruin your day faster than a bunch of flying insects, whether you are out for a day in the woods, having a cookout in your backyard or driving through a cloud of them at 55 mph. Some, like the love bugs (so named because they are often seen copulating), can cause serious problems such as damage to car radiators and paint jobs, while others, like flies, can be more of a nuisance. If you want to repel love bugs and other flying insects, a number of different chemical and non-chemical solutions are available. Does this Spark an idea?

Dark Colors

If you are having an infestation of love bugs and other flying insects at your home regularly, consider painting it a darker color. Love bugs and other flying insects like to sit on white or off-white surfaces because it allows them to warm their bodies without getting too warm and causing damage to their internal organs.

Vacuum Cleaners

Using a vacuum cleaner on the flying insects when they land, if they are inside or even outside your house, works well. Shop Vac type cleaners are better because they do not require bags, and you can dump them easily. But don't use a vacuum cleaner that you regularly use elsewhere; stink bugs, for one, can cause the vacuum cleaner itself to develop an odor after repeated use in eradicating the smelly flying insects.

Electronic Zappers

Bug zappers, commonly used to fight mosquitoes and other flying pests, can fight love bugs as well. These devices have a fluorescent light with an electrical charge, and when the bug investigates the source of the light and lands on it, it is electrocuted. These are useful for fixed outside locations such as patios and porches.

Insect Spray

You can apply permethrin or other insect treatments to your lawn to kill the larvae or the adult bugs when they land on your grass. A number of other flying insect killing chemicals, such as Raid, can help if you need to spray the bugs in the air. Be careful what you spray, as some of the chemicals can remove paint or stain vinyl siding.
