Suntan Lotion Vs Sunscreen

Suntan lotion and sunscreen are products that are sometimes confused with each other, but they're not the same. Suntan lotion contains no ingredients that protect against damage by the sun. Does this Spark an idea?

Suntan Lotion

Suntan lotion refers to various products that are designed to increase the effect of ultraviolet light rather than protect against it. "Sunless" tanning lotion increases melanin production by the skin without sun exposure.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is designed to deflect harmful ultraviolet light from the skin. The product is intended to prevent skin cancer, which can result from sun damage. A sunscreen formula might contain ingredients such as aminobenzoic acid, padimate O and oxybenzone. Sunscreens are available as lotion, spray, gel and lip balm.

SPF

Sunscreen typically has a skin protection factor, or SPF, number on the container. Higher numbers mean a higher level of protection from the sun. Regardless of the number, reapplication is necessary after swimming and sweating.
